Clinical evaluation of biomarkers and assays for assessing
kidney function

Our research involves development of new laboratory assays and testing of biomarkers for monitoring kidney performance. We have evaluated the role for cystatin C as a new biomarker for glomerular filtration rate. This parameter is a measure of the flow rate of filtered fluid through the kidney and is an excellent indicator of kidney health.
We also investigate the effect of fluid intake on the level of proteinuria and on kidney dysfunction. Proteinuria represents an excess of serum proteins in the urine and is indicative of kidney damage. We use a novel protein electrophoresis assay to look for the type of protein associated with high fluid intake (e.g., glomerular, tubular, or mixed proteinuria).
