Operating/Infrastructure/Personnel Grants for Teams

Grants for Team Development
- provides seed money to support health research activities that represent a first step towards the pursuit of more comprehensive funding opportunities (e.g., operating grants, team grants)
- examples of activities supported include:
- planning and/or development activities of expert teams (multi-disciplinary, trans-disciplinary, etc.) coming together to address health research priorities
- planning and execution of pilot projects or feasibility studies aiming to generate preliminary data, observations, or knowledge
- planning and execution of novel projects that demonstrate potential for significant impact, but which are considered high risk in nature (unsupported by proof of concept / preliminary data)
- development and/or validation of new inventions, tools, methodologies, protocols, theoretical models or frameworks
- specific calls for proposals are made in target areas
- objectives and deadlines are specific to each grant

- to provide support for planning activities, partnership development and/or increasing the team's understanding of the health research landscape
- amount: $25,000 for one year
- deadline: 17 Oct
- some examples:
- Initial planning and discussion of a research project among potential team members
- Activities that assist potential teams of researchers, knowledge-users and/or partners in working together to identify research questions or emerging issues and priorities that could form the basis of a grant application
- Gatherings of partners, health researchers, and/or knowledge users where the main objective is to facilitate regional/national and/or international collaboration interested in applying to a funding opportunity
Burroughs Wellcome Fund - Collaborative Research Travel Grants
- provides support for researchers to travel either domestically or internationally to a laboratory to acquire a new research technique, facilitate a collaboration, or attend a laboratory/lecture course
- applicants must hold a Ph.D. or be currently studying in a Ph.D. program in mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, statistics, or engineering and be interested in investigating research opportunities in the biological sciences
- biologists interested in working with physical scientists, mathematicians, engineers, chemists, statisticians, or computer scientists to incorporate their ideas and approaches to answering biological questions are eligible
- amount: up to $15,000
- deadline: Dec
- funding for strategic international collaborations between Ontario research institutions and the global research community
- for improving Ontario’s long-term economic potential by attracting and retaining the best and brightest research talent
- priority given to collaborations with researchers in US, UK, Germany, France, Japan, China, and India
- funds up to 50% of eligible costs on a one-time basis, with balance coming from non-Ontario government sources
- does not fund research
- funds project management, creation of research links, travel for networking, dissemination of collaborative information
- amount: up to $150,000 over 3 years
- no set deadline
James S. McDonnell Foundation – Collaborative Activity Award
- initiates interdisciplinary discussions on problems or issues, helps launch interdisciplinary research networks, or funds communities of researchers/practitioners dedicated to developing new methods, tools, and applications of basic research to applied problems
- areas of research must include Studying Complex Systems, Brain Cancer Research, or Understanding Human Cognition

Ontario Genomics Institute (OGI) – Genomics Project Development Workshop Program
- supports researcher-initiated workshops that aim to stimulate collaborations leading to international funding or in-kind contributions in support of large-scale genomics research
- workshops must be held in Ontario and focus on a unique, well defined research area
- $10,000 available per workshop
- deadlines: January, April, July, October

Cancer Research Society (CRS) Operating Grant
- supports research activities of independent scientists or small groups of investigators
- topic areas must include cancer
- specific calls for proposals are also made in target areas
- amount: maximum of $60,000/year for 2 years
- deadlines: Dec (letter of intent); Feb (full application by invitation only)
Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute (CCSRI) - Impact Grant
- supports large, well-developed programs in cancer research that have the potential to make a significant impact on the burden of disease in patients and populations
- for individual investigators or multidisciplinary teams
- amount: up to $250,000/year for 5 years
- renewable
- deadlines: Feb (LOI); Sept (full application)
Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute (CCSRI) - Innovation Grant
- supports unconventional concepts, approaches, or methodologies to address problems in cancer research
- for individual investigators with or without co-investigators
- amount: up to $100,000/year for 2 years
- not renewable
- deadlines: 1) Aug (registration), Oct (proposal); 2) Feb (registration), Apr (proposal)
Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute (CCSRI) - Multisector Team Grant in Prevention Research
- for groups of investigators across multiple sectors or disciplines to approach a common problem related to cancer prevention and risk reduction research
- specific topic areas requested (see website)
- amount: up to $250,000/year for 4 years
- not renewable
- deadlines: Sept (LOI); Mar (proposal)
Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) – Research Program Grant
- for novel collaborations involving teams of scientists working in different countries and in different disciplines
- for independent researchers at any stage of their careers
- principal applicant must be from one of the eligible countries (Canada is one)
- co-applicants may be situated anywhere in the world
- amount: up to $450,000/yr for 3 years
- applicants must submit a letter of intent via the HFSP website in March
- selected teams will be invited to submit a full application due in September
NSERC Discovery Grants Program – Team Grant
- supports ongoing programs of research with long-term goals
- recognizes creativity and innovation
- similar to Individual Grant, but co-applicants apply with lead applicant
- applicants who see advantages in working together in a long-range collaborative program are encouraged to combine their efforts and apply as a team
- researchers can apply for only one Discovery Grant at a time, either individually or as part of a team
- up to 5 years
- registration (Form 180) due in August; proposals due November
NSERC Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) Program
- supports the training of teams of highly qualified students and postdoctoral fellows from Canada and abroad
- develops innovative training programs that encourage collaborative and integrative approaches
- addresses significant scientific challenges associated with Canada's research priorities
- facilitates the transition of new researchers from trainees to productive employees in the Canadian workforce
- consists of a group of accomplished researchers who will work collaboratively to offer a defined research training program relevant to both academic and non-academic careers
- amount: up to $150,000 in the first year; up to $300,000 annually in subsequent years; maximum of 6 years
- letter of intent due May; full proposals by invitation only (due in September)
NSERC/CIHR Collaborative Health Research Projects (CHRP) Program
- supports collaborative research in any field of the natural sciences and engineering that will lead to health benefits for Canadians, more effective health services, and economic development in health-related areas
- no upper limit on budget; average grant is $125,000-$155,000/year for 3 years
- letter of intent due May; full proposals by invitation only (due in October)
NSERC Strategic Project Grants (SPG) Program
- increases research and training in targeted areas that could strongly enhance Canada’s economy, society and/or environment within the next 10 years
- funds early-stage project research in targeted areas
- at least one academic researcher and at least one supporting organization must collaborate in the project (supporting organization: a Canadian-based company or a government organization)
- applicants should incorporate international collaborations into their proposals
- amount: avg. of $150,000/year for 1-3 years (no maximum amount of funding)
- deadline: April
NSERC Strategic Network Grants (SNG) Program
- funds large-scale, multi-disciplinary research projects in targeted research areas that require a network approach and that involve collaboration between academic researchers and Canadian-based organizations
- increases research and training in targeted areas that could strongly enhance Canada’s economy, society, and/or environment
- up to 5 years
- preliminary applications due in June; proposals by invitation only
Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE) Program
- fosters multi-disciplinary, multi-sectoral partnerships between academia, industry, government and not-for-profit organizations
- supports academic research, the commercialization of products and ideas, and the development of significant Canadian business advantages

Ministry of Economic Development and Innovation - Ontario-China Research and Innovation Fund (OCRIF)
- promotes scientific, technological and industrial research and commercialization cooperation between Ontario and China
- team will include 2 Principal Investigators (one from Ontario and one from China) who will represent the project and be responsible for the management of the application
- for 3 years
- amount: $500,000 in Ontario and $500,000 in China to a total of $1M per project

- promotes research excellence in Ontario by supporting transformative, internationally significant research of strategic value to the province
- supports operational costs (direct and indirect) of research
- contributes maximum of 1/3 of operating costs, with 1/3 of remainder coming from private sector and 1/3 from institution
- minimum support is $1 million and maximum support is $8 million
- must submit a letter of intent and full proposal

Canada Foundation for Innovation - Leading Edge Fund (LEF) and New Initiatives Fund (NIF)
- for innovative and transformative infrastructure projects covering research and development activities
- projects will lead to breakthroughs and advantages for Canadians
- LEF: for leading edge activities that build on past CFI investments
- NIF: for promising innovative directions in research and technology development that do not build on past CFI investments
- deadline: Jan 2012 (letter of intent); Apr 2012 (full proposal)
- strengthens Canada’s science and technology, business to business relations, and overall economic, trade, and political relations
- provides networking opportunities and funding to support Canadian participation in collaborative research projects with counterparts in Brazil, China, California, Israel, and India
- emphasis is placed on research projects with the potential for commercial application
