OUTREACH Science Ontario began in 1997 when Drs. Chris Brandl and Greg Gloor, professors in the Department of Biochemistry in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University, started taking Biotechnology labs to high schools in London Ontario. The program quickly grew and is now actively used by 14 local area high schools. Our group has expanded to include more than 44 high school teachers who have taken training to teach the modules. Enhancements to the program have come from these dedicated participants. Special thanks go to Catherine Nikota and Esther Loney for suggestions each has made to improve the experimental protocols.
Over 4000 students have completed the labs which are considered by students as the highlight of their senior Biology course.
Most significant student comments: "We are the biotechnologists of the future." and "Bio ROCKS!".
The program has been historically supported by Alumni Western, the Bachelor of Medical Sciences Program at UWO, NSERC PromoScience and Fisher Scientific. The Department of Biochemistry continues to maintain the program by providing necessary reagents and personnel to keep it going.
We are always interested in additional collaborations that will enhance this initiative. If you would like to participate, we would be delighted to hear from you. Please contact Dr. Chris Brandl (cbrandl@uwo.ca) in the Department of Biochemistry at Western University, London, Canada.
