The Dr. Maud L. Menten Memorial Lecture Series are held annually by the Department of Biochemistry. Two mini-symposia and at least eight lectures will be held each year. The speakers are expected to be active, high-profile scientists and are nominated by the Department of Biochemistry research community. Invitations are sent after selection of the speakers by the Dr. Maud L. Menten Memorial Lecture Series Committee. If you wish to nominate a potential speaker please send the name of the scientist and a brief description to Megan Davey.

Dr. Menten (1879-1960) was born in Port Lambton, Ontario and was one of the first women to graduate with a medical doctorate in Canada (1911). She is best known for the Michaelis-Menten equation that provides a mathematical means for determining the rate of an enzyme reaction. In addition, Dr. Menten has made many other contributions, publishing over 80 papers. Dr. Menten joined the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1918 as an instructor. She retired as full professor in 1950. Afterwards, Dr. Menten pursued research at the British Columbia Research Institute until her death in 1960. In addition to her commitment to research and teaching, Dr. Menten played clarinet, was an accomplished painter, and spoke several languages.

For more information about the seminar series, please contact Melita Hayes or Megan Davey.
