What is Biochemistry?
Biochemistry is the study of molecules and mechanisms in living organisms. In biochemistry we explore the structure and function of the key biomolecules (proteins, lipids, carbohydrates and nucleic acids) that allow the growth and development of all organisms. The study of biological processes helps us to understand diseases and to see ways to a healthier existence.
Why an Honors Specialization (Major or Minor) in Biochemistry?
The study of Biochemistry is directly applicable to a diverse array of careers. A degree in Biochemistry emphasizes the development of skills in communication, problem solving, and critical thinking, as well as the technical and theoretical aspects of state-of-the art experimental research. Indeed Biochemistry is the most requested discipline for many career choices, both in the greater scientific community and beyond. Graduates of an Honors Specialization in Biochemistry are valued employees in academia, biotechnology, environmental and financial fields. Furthermore, Biochemistry provides the skills necessary in many professional programs: medicine, dentistry, engineering, teaching and law.
Your courses could include:
Molecular Genetics of Human Cancer; Protein Structure, Analysis and Design; Biological Macromolecules and Macromolecular Informatics. Students can also engage in one-on-one interactions with leading professors in the field as they participate in their Biochemistry Research Project.
