Welcome to The Functional Proteomics Facility

The Functional Proteomics Facility is equipped with instrumentation for the fractionation of complex biological mixtures as well as instrumentation for the subsequent analysis and processing of these samples in preparation for analysis by mass spectrometry.

Instrumentation housed within this facility includes an AKTA Purifier FPLC system, IPG-Phor and Protean Plus Dodeca Cell for 2D electrophoresis, ProExpress Imaging System with Progenesis 2D analysis software, Ettan Spot-Picker for robotic excision of protein spots from gels, MASSPrep for automated proteolytic digestion of proteins and subsequent peptide extraction, and LC-MALDIPrep that includes a capillary HPLC integrated with a MALDI spotter.

About Us

The Functional Proteomics Facility at Western University was established in 2005, in order to provide the scientific community with a number of different instrumentation to aid in complex biological sample analysis. The Facility offers various tools to perform protein purification, chromatographic and/or electrophoretic separations, gel imaging and image analysis, robotic spot picking, and automated in-gel digestion.

The sample preparation carried out at The Functional Proteomics Facility is particularly suited for high-throughput protein identification by mass spectrometry. To offer a direct service of protein identification by peptide mass fingerprint, the Facility works in close conjunction with the MALDI Mass Spectrometry Facility.
